Digital Literacy
Why
Young people in Nairobi’s informal settlements face barriers to entering the digital economy, including the cost of quality training, limited access to equipment and a lack of opportunities to gain practical experience. These barriers make it difficult for young people to acquire the foundational skills needed to pursue further education, employment and entrepreneurship.
What
The Digital Literacy Program (DLP) is a 12-week foundational digital skills course for underserved youth aged 17–24. It introduces learners to computer literacy, design, marketing, online freelancing, entrepreneurship, video production, financial literacy and leadership, with mentorship and sexual and reproductive health education integrated into the learning experience.
How
NairoBits delivers DLP within communities through partnerships with local hosting centres, making training more accessible to young people who may otherwise struggle to reach or afford it. The program combines practical digital skills training with mentorship and personal development, while regularly updating its curriculum to reflect employer needs and changes in the digital landscape.
